What is BER?
A Building Energy Rating (BER) is a comprehensive energy assessment of a property carried out by a qualified and registered BER Assessor.
The assessment takes into account the insulation properties of all the building elements, solar gains, ventilation losses, thermal bridging, heating system efficiency etc.
Once the assessment has been completed by the qualified BER assessor then they will submit this to the SEI for approval and will get back to you with your BER certificate. The BER certificate is valid for ten years from the date of issue.
Why do we have a BER system?
The BER system has been introduced to Ireland enable us to comply with the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD), this directive was introduced to help achieve carbon reductions targeted in the Kyoto protocol.
The BER system is designed to assess the standard of energy efficiency of our buildings and provide the information to allow informed decisions on the most energy efficient technology and design in new buildings and to encourage improvements in efficiency of existing buildings.
